Kessel was a presumably rocky planet that was known for its spice mines.

Kessel is assumed to contain a rocky terrain that contained the mineral spice, because of this mines were established to harvest the spice.
History
By the time of the Empire, Kessel was a place where undesirable droids would be sent to work in their spice mines. The droid C-3PO during the Capture of Tantive IV worried that if him and his companion R2-D2 were captured by Imperial forces, they would be sent to the spice mines. They would be salvaged for their components for other droids that worked the mines.[1]
