Red Five was a call-sign used by Red Squadron of the Rebel Alliance. Pilots carrying the call-sign typically had their fighters emblazoned with five red bars.
History
Luke Skywalker was given the call-sign when he joined Red Squadron immediately before the Battle of Yavin.
Behind the Scenes
In Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker Luke Skywalker is given the call-sign Blue Five, as was originally in the Script for the film. Since the color blue on the X-Wing's was impossible to film on the blue screens the props were repainted red and was changed to Red Five in the film, because of this a retcon was made by the film overwriting the novel.
