Palpatine (Pronounced: Pal-pa-teen) was the Emperor of the Galactic Empire and former President of the Republic.[1]
Biography
Palpatine rose to prominence at a time of peace and prosperity for the Old Republic, however from within the Republic it had begun to become corrupt and rot due to power-hungry individuals and commercial interests it was through careful aiding and abetting of these groups Palpatine was able to be elected to the position of President using promises of reunification of the disaffected peoples of the Republic and restore the glory of the Republic. This would turn out to be lies for as soon as he was secured within office he declared himself Emperor and began shutting himself away from the Imperial populace and apparently became just a puppet for those he appointed in positions of power within the Empire. Following the extermination of the Jedi Knights, Imperial governors, and bureaucrats began a reign of terror in the name of Emperor Palpatine in order to subjugate worlds and rebellion.[1]

Palpatine was described as ambitious, it was this ambition that allowed him to rise to the seat of political power within the Old Republic as President of the Republic and declare himself Emperor.[1]
