Old Republic

The Old Republic was a government that was ruled by the Senate and protected by the Jedi Knights. It was replaced when Palpatine established his New Order transforming the republic into an empire.

History

It is precisely unknown when the Republic came into existence; however, its influence grew due to the rule of a wise Senate and the protection of the Jedi Knights. At the height of the Republic, it was invulnerable to any external forces but soon began to rot due to the corruption of large commerce organizations and greedy politicians and bureaucrats from within the government. Due to the corruption, it allowed the ambitious Senator Palpatine to be elected as the President of the Republic, with the promise to reunite those disaffected citizens and restore the glory of the Old Republic. However, once he was firmly in office, President Palpatine declared himself Emperor and established his New Order, replacing the Republic.
